OLYMPIC RINGS AND FLAG FOR THE FIRST TIME WERE SEEN ON THE OG IN
ANTWERP, 1920. FLAME WAS LIT FOR THE FIRST TIME ON THE MODERN OG IN
AMSTERDAM 1928.
Symbols recognized by everyone
The Olympic movement uses many symbols, most of them representing
Coubertin's ideas and ideals. The best known symbol is probably that
of the Olympic Rings. These five intertwined rings represent the
unity of five continents (the Americas are considered one
continent). They appear in five colors on a white field on the
Olympic Flag. These colors, white (for the field), red, blue, green,
yellow, and black were chosen such that each nation had at least one
of these colors in its national flag.
The flag was adopted in 1914, but the first Games at which it was
flown were Antwerp, 1920. It is hoisted at each celebration of the
Games.
Symbol of the eternal fire stams from the Greek mithology, from the
famous story about Prometheus, who stole the fire from the home of
God Zeus, and gave it to people. That motive was used by Greeks, so
during the ancient Olympic games they always kept the eternal fire
burning. For the first time on the opening of the modern Olympic
games, the flame was lit on the Olympic games in Amsterdam 1928
The Olympic Torch today is ignited several months before the opening
celebration of the Olympic Games at the site of the ancient Olympics
in Olympia, Greece. Eleven women, representing the roles of
priestesses, perform a ceremony in which the torch is kindled by the
light of the Sun, its rays concentrated by a parabolic mirror.
The torch is then transported to the host city of the upcoming
Olympics by a torch relay. Though traditionally, the flame is
carried on foot, other means of transportation have been used as
well. The runners have included athletes and celebrities, but many
previously 'unknown' people have also carried it, often chosen for
their personal merits and achievements.
Carrying the torch from Greece to place where Olympic Games are
held, is impossible to travel by running. Nevertheless, it is done
in that way wherever possible. Carrying the Olympic torch is special
honour, escpecially for famous athletes from the countries through
which the toch is passing through, on its way.
The final carrier is often kept secret until the last moment, and is
usually a sports celebrity of the host country. Sometimes, the host
choooses persons who are not directly involved in soprts, like it
was the case on the Olympic games in Montreal 1976, where two young
people were chosen to start the flame, young man from the French
part of Canada, and young girl from English part of Canada, which
symbolised togetherness of the two parts of the host country.
The Olympic Flame is lit in Olympia and brought to the host city by
runners carrying the torch in relay. There it plays an important
role in the opening ceremonies. Though the torch fire has been
around since 1928, the relay was introduced in 1936.
