Creator of the
modern Judo, Jigoro Kano, was born in 1860. Since his early years,
he studied and practiced different schools of Ju-Jitsu in Japan. By
using already gained knowledges and researches, from various
schools, he chose the best techiques, improves and adjusts them,
some of them he creates, leaded by the moto: minimum strenght,
maximum efficiency. In that way, he shapes his own fighting system
and calls it "Ju-do" (Ju – gentle, flexible, do – way, road,
principle).
About the purpose of this principle, Kano said: "Judo represents the
most efficient way of using our physical and mental strenght. By
practicing the attack and the defence, Judo strenghtens your body
and your mind, and helps you accept its principles as your own. On
that way, you improve yourself and become valuable member of the
community, which is the purpose of Judo".
Judo technique is based on several basic principles: principle of
non resistence, summarised in the moto „give in in order to win“,
principle of energy concentration, principle of non balance, the
right moment principle and principle of maximal efficiency. Judo is
practiced in special clothes called Judo-gi, and compulsory on
special mattresses (tatami).
Ranking level in Judo – grades and levels, are marked with specific
colour of the belt. There are six learning grades (from 6 to 1),
marked with white, yellow, orange, green, blue and brown belt. Above
the brown belt, there are ten days or master levels (from 1 to 10),
marked from 1 to 5 th level with the black belt, from 6 to 8 th
level with the purple white, and 9 and 10 th level with purple belt.
