About
Olympic games in general
Olympic games are competitions between sportsmen, both in individual
and in team disciplines, not between countries. They gather
sportsmen, who were named by their Olympic committees, and whose
applications were accepted by International Olympic committee, and
who compete with their sports associations for regular leadership of
international associations.
The highest body for any question concerning Olympic games is IOC.
Olympic games consist of Olympic games and winter Olympic games.
Olympic games take place every four years (excerpt from Olympic
charter).

History background
French
pedagogue and humanist Pierre de Coubertin very well introduced to
history of antique, came to idea that Olympic games should be
renewed so that they could give sports organizational and human
content. Thanks to his persistence, he organized Founding congress
of International Olympic committee in Paris in 1894., for which he
set up the rules. In the big arena theater on Paris Sorbonne in
1894., 79 delegates and 49 sports associations from 12 countries
unanimity accepted the decision to renew Olympic games.
After the decision of the first Congress of the International
Olympic committee, first renewed Olympic games were in capital of
Greece, cradle of Olympic games, Athens, in 1986.
First particular principle of modern Olympic games established by
Pierre Coubertini is that in them should not be discrimination of
the sportsmen, on the race, religion, national or politic basis.
By renewing Olympic games, besides competitions, Pierre de Coubertin
wanted to renew the spirit of the ceremony too. That is why beside
competition of the sportsmen, Swedes introduced competitions of the
artists in 1912. It lasted for next seven games, and after London in
1948. it was cancelled.
