THE OLYMPIC FLAME FROM PROMETHEUS TO BEIJING
2008.
Eternal fire for the first time lit in Amsterdam 1928.
Symbol of the eternal fire stams from the Greek mithology, from the
famous story about Prometheus, who stole the fire from the home of
God Zeus, and gave it to people. That motive was used by Greeks, so
during the ancient Olympic games they always kept the eternal fire
burning. For the first time on the opening of the modern Olympic
games, the flame was lit on the Olympic games in Amsterdam 1928, and
the torch relay was inaugurated as the part of the openiong ceremony
of the Olympic games in Berlin 1936.
The Olympic Torch today is ignited several months before the opening
celebration of the Olympic Games at the site of the ancient Olympics
in Olympia, Greece. Eleven women, representing the roles of
priestesses, perform a ceremony in which the torch is kindled by the
light of the Sun, its rays concentrated by a parabolic mirror.
The torch is then transported to the host city of the upcoming
Olympics by a torch relay. Though traditionally, the flame is
carried on foot, other means of transportation have been used as
well. The runners have included athletes and celebrities, but many
previously 'unknown' people have also carried it, often chosen for
their personal merits and achievements.
The Olympic Torch Relay ends on the day of the opening ceremony in
the central stadium of the Games.
The final bearer of the torch runs towards the cauldron, usually
placed at the top of a grand staircase, and then uses the torch to
start the flame in the stadium. It is generally considered a great
honour to be asked to light the Olympic Flame. After being lit, the
flame continues to burn throughout the celebration of the Olympics
and is extinguished at end of the closing ceremony of the Games.
The final carrier is often kept secret until the last moment, and is
usually a sports celebrity of the host country. Sometimes, the host
choooses persons who are not directly involved in soprts, like it
was the case on the Olympic games in Montreal 1976, where two young
people were chosen to start the flame, young man from the French
part of Canada, and young girl from English part of Canada, which
symbolised togetherness of the two parts of the host country.
It is the great honour to be the final bearer of the flame, and it
happens only once in a lifetime. It is also the greatest honour for
sports in general.
