Games of the Small States of Europe

Table tennis players (team) in semi-finals

In the first match against Cyprus that lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes, Čekić lost four match points. In next two matches they won against Malta 3:2 and Iceland 3:0. Today thay play in the semi finals against Luxembourg.

They are the youngest ones, with least experience but Montenegrin table tennis players Irfan Čekić and Luka Bakić,led by their selector Dijana Zonjić, could not be prevented to place themselves in the semi finals of the Games of the Small States of Europe even though the first match against Cyprus lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes. Pause between three matches (two singles and one double) was short (between first and second hour and a half, and between second and third half an hour, and how difficult it was shows the fact that our players played ten sets in first and second match!), but both of them coped with exhaustion and outplayed selections that were favorites.
Čekić and Bakić will play against Luxembourg in the semi finals today.

-It is difficult, exhausting, demanding but guys succeeded. They showed enormous strength, psychological stability, and in what amount they were focused showed the fact that they didn’t lost their hope after the first match against Cyprus when they led 2:0 in sets and had four match balls.– said selector Zonjić. – In next two it was more demanding, but the quality showed.

Table tennis players stayed longest at the venues yesterday. They left the hotel at 9 and came back at 21.30.

- Guys showed that table tennis in Montenegro is progressing and that we can count on them in the future. These Games are great experience for Irfan and Luka and all our other representatives, said President of MOC, Dušan Simonović. – Placement to the semi finals is great success, and even though yesterday was also successful for other competitors, I hope that we will have reason for celebration today and in next few days.

Volleyball natinal team closer to the medal after defeating Cyprus

Cyprus-Montenegro 1:3
Hall „Trizenberg“. Visitors: 100. Referees: Results in sets: 24:26, 25:19, 21:25, 15:25.
CYPRUS: Platritis, Sagkaridis, Georgiu, Kacifilipou, Knežević, Papaioanou, Aleksiou, Ekonomides, Papahristodulou, Panaitidis.
MONTENEGRO: Minić Bojić, Ćuk, Strugar, Rašović, Dukić, Dabović, Radunović, Milivojević, Šuljagić, Ječmenica, Ćulafić.

They didin’t satisfy with their game but victoy is what counts at the end – against biggest rival at the Games „the Reds“ managed to triumph and today agains San Marino (16) it seems as if they shouldn’t miss to win new points against weaker rival.

Captain Simo Dabović and other in the first set, or all the way to the end seemed more confident, but at the result 23:20, they allowed Cypus to make series of points and they took over the leed 24:23 ! In this part of the match opponents showed that in the next set they will be more serious and tougher. And they were! They even had five point difference. Obviously weaker period in the second set woke up and warned players and selector Ivan Joksimović, and in next two sets, especially in the fourth, they easily finished the match.

-First match at opening of any event is difficult, it carries certain tension and anxiety, which was exactly the case with our match against Cyprus. We started the match with lots of axiety at that reflected the way we played at the end of the first set where we lost the leed 23:20 and regained it at the very finish. In the second set we made lots of technical errors, at the service reception also and that gave the opportunity to the opponent to catch up. In third and fourth sets we corrected the game, block and attack which made us more secure and we finished the macth in our favor. Cyprus was very courageously, as we expected and they didn’t have anything to lose even in those parts of the match where we had problems. We are satisflied with the result but not with the game because this was not our level but for sure, in next days we will rise our level sionce this team has potential and quality – said selector Ivan Joksimović.

Montenegrin tennis player Ljubomir Čelebić in the quarter finals of the Games

It couldn’t be faster, and he managed ot defeat Damien GELABERT CHAMBRONN from Andorra 2:0 in the 1. Round letting him win only one gem (first set, his serve) and that shows the shape of Montenegrin tennis player Ljubomir Čelebić. He will rest today and tomorrow in the quarter finals he will most probably play against Mike Vermeer !

At the beginning of the match stage fright did its job, and Čelebić told us his feet wouldn’t listen in the first gem but he managed to beat his opponent with strong serve. He announced his quest by coming to Lichtenstein.

- I entere the match weaker than ususally, lost serve at the beginning, but at the end it all turned out great. I was secure but I didn’t expect I will win in this way. This is important victory for me which gives me strength and optimism for the next one. In the next match I will most probably play against player from Luxembourg who is on 900 place at ATP list and fourth ath the Games, but despite all of that I believe in myself and the victory.

Montenegrin athletes compete today in high jump and 10.000 m race

Poll could not be lower.Athletes will start their competition in high jump today from 145 cm. Low, very low for the world junior champion Marija Vuković,who will most probably skip few heights and start when the poll reaches 160.

Her goal is to surpass two thisyears scores – she will go for 180 cm. Is it achievable?
-I hope it is. I really have full support and I believe that I’ll succeed today and win a medal, said Vuković

Small hight physically „kills“ our competitor, but...

-Those 180 cm look like a skyline in comparison to starting 145 cm. But I will give my best and try to concentrate – said the champion.
Other Montenegrin representative, Slađana Perunović, will compete in 10.000 m race and will try to make good placement. She will also compete in 5.000m and 1.500 m race.

Prince Albert and president of MOC Dušan Simonović supported tennis players

Besides being great fan of formula, Princ Albert is also big tennis fan, and he confirmed it yesterday when he supported his competitors together with the president of MOC, Dušan Simonović. During the tournament part of the principal family attended some matches.
President of MOC also supported volleyball players, and today he will support world junior champion Marija Vuković and Slađana Perunović.
