Seminar on fight against doping

Dušan Simonović, President of MOC, Teimuraz Ukleba, Director General of In the great room of Hotel Podgorica, in organization of the Health Commissiona of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee yesterday was held seminar “Enhancement of anti-doping control in sport”.

Speakers were the Regional Anti-doping Organization for Eastern Europe and Dr Mira Jovanovski-Dašić, official representative of Montenegro at the Regional Anti-Doping Organization for Eastern Europe.

Doping is one of the greatest problems in sport today. More and more athletes are using illicit substances for achieving greater success at competitions. Dušan Simonović stated that everybody must be involved in fight against this phenomenon.

- Often, Montenegrin athletes participate at big events but they are not familiar with rules and procedures of the World Anti-Doping Agency.MOC adopted international rules and made its own national rules for fight against doping, but we also cooperate with other relevant institutions, help various researches and follows possible violation of rules all with aim to more efficiently fight against this pestilence – said Simonović.

Teimuraz Ukleba is satisfied with cooperation MOC.

- We conducted control in Podgorica on 10 athletes and I hope to continuation of cooperation with the Anti-Doping Commission of Montenegro. IOC, IMOC and all national Olympic Committees are anti-doping agencies, even though it happens that some of them don’t understand that so they need additional education. It is, also, very important to know that there are 35 certified laboratories in the world that are allowed to perform doping controls. In 2010 were analyzed around 300 thousand samples, out of which 1,85 percent were positive – said Ukleba.
-None of the athletes is allowed to refuse testing, and they are not the only ones to handle the consequences in case of violation of anti-doping rules, but also their doctors, medical staff even national institutions. National sport federations must accept cooperation with the World Anti-Doping Agency and its recommendations must be included in national legislations.

Mira Jovanovski-Dašić introduced the present with the procedure of sample collection from athletes.
-Athletes can be tested anywhere anytime without previous notification, but only by trained experts. Two examples are collected; one for testing and the other one is being sent to other laboratory unless the first one is positive. Forms that are sent to laboratory do not contain personal data on athlete tested. They fill in time when the athlete was notified about testing, and by the beginning of the process itself it should not pass more than an hour – said Jovanovski-Dašić.
- Within that hour, athlete is constantly accompanied by controller who makes sure that the testing procedure is in accordance with regulations. This is very important in case sample turns out to be positive and athlete will have an opportunity to appeal if he/she thinks that the procedure was not properly followed.
